Nervous System Check-In — Find Your Balance 💛

Aug 7, 2025 | Self-Care, Weekly Blog

Think of your body as a finely tuned instrument, like a musical string or a delicate set of scales. The nervous system is the thread that keeps everything in harmony. When life gets hectic, it’s easy for this balance to tip, much like a stringed instrument going out of tune. The trick is to notice when the tension builds up and take the time to realign, just like a musician would tune their instrument before playing. By tuning into your body’s signals, you can bring yourself back into balance and restore harmony.

Your nervous system has an important job: it regulates your response to stress. When faced with a stressful situation, it activates one of four main responses: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These are automatic reactions designed to protect you, but when you’re in this heightened state for too long, it can feel overwhelming. This is where somatic therapy—focusing on the connection between mind and body—becomes incredibly powerful. By learning to tune into your body’s sensations and noticing when you’re dysregulated, you can take steps to bring your nervous system back to a place of calm.

On a typical day, you might find yourself in “fight” mode when you’re feeling defensive or reactive, or “flight” when you want to avoid confrontation or overwhelming tasks. Perhaps you’re in “freeze” mode, feeling stuck and unable to move forward, or “fawn” mode, where you’re overly people-pleasing to avoid conflict. These states can drain your energy, leaving you feeling out of sync. But just like a musician adjusting the tension on their strings or a chef checking their spices, you can bring your nervous system back to harmony with simple, grounding practices.

Take a moment to check in with your nervous system. How are you feeling today? Are you in a state of high alert, or do you feel balanced and present? Grounding yourself through breathwork, stretching, or spending a few minutes in nature can help reset your nervous system, bringing you back into balance and feeling more centered.

Use these journal questions to help you check in with your body and bring your nervous system back into harmony:
🎵 How am I feeling physically today? Is there tension in my body, or do I feel relaxed and grounded?
🎵 What emotional or mental state am I noticing today? Am I in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn mode?
🎵 What can I do right now to help myself feel more centered and calm? Can I take a few deep breaths, move my body, or step outside for a break?

Just like any instrument needs tuning to play its best, your nervous system benefits from regular check-ins to stay in harmony. Taking small moments to check in with yourself, especially during stressful times, can help you find peace and balance.
