INTERN COUNSELLOR IN MAPLE RIDGE
Hi, I’m Samantha Ahmed
I bring a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based approach to my work, and aim to create a space where you feel heard and able to explore without judgement.
As an intern counsellor in Maple Ridge, BC, I am a Master of Social Work (MSW) student completing my practicum placement at Ignite Counselling. I understand that reaching out for counselling can feel vulnerable, and opening up about what’s happening in your life isn’t always easy. We all carry stories that have shaped who we are, I’m grateful for the opportunity to get to know you and hear about yours.
Before coming to Ignite, I worked in community and support roles, connecting with people from different backgrounds and walks of life. These experiences taught me that there is no one “right” way to navigate challenges and showed me the importance of connection. Outside of school and my practicum at Ignite, I also work at a university supporting students facing personal and academic challenges such as stress, burnout, experiences of sexual violence, interpersonal conflict, and mental health concerns. Rather than searching for what’s wrong, I believe you are the expert in your own life and I see my role as providing a supportive space where we can make sense of what you’re going through, and unpack the beliefs we hold about who we are and what our lives should look like. I bring a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and strengths-based approach to my work, and aim to create a space where you feel heard and able to explore without judgement. Whether you’re navigating a difficult situation or simply feeling stuck, let’s figure out together what you want your next chapter to look like.
My Interest in Somatic Work...
An area of counselling that interests me is somatic work and the connection between our mind and body. As a social worker, I’ve always been interested in understanding people within the context of their environments. Learning about the ways those experiences can show up in our bodies feels like a natural extension of that. Sometimes we can explain exactly what is going on, and other times we just know that something doesn’t feel right. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn with Ignite about how bringing more awareness to the body can support healing in the counselling process.
