Emotional Check-In—Be the Coach of Your Inner Game 💛

Jul 24, 2025 | Self-Care, Weekly Blog

In the game of life, we often focus on the big wins—achieving goals, meeting deadlines, and overcoming challenges. But just like in sports, it’s not always the outward achievements that matter most. The most successful athletes know that understanding and managing their inner game is key to long-term success. This is where emotional check-ins come in—pausing to assess how you’re feeling, both mentally and physically, is like a coach checking in with their team during halftime. It’s a chance to regroup, make adjustments, and come back stronger.

Think of your emotions like the players on a sports team. Each emotion—whether it’s joy, frustration, excitement, or exhaustion—has a role to play in your mental and emotional well-being. When you’re feeling confident and focused, your “team” is working together in perfect harmony. But when stress, anxiety, or frustration creeps in, your players may get out of sync, causing your energy to drain. Just like a coach who calls for a timeout to reassess the game plan, you can take a moment to check in with your emotions, noticing where your energy is being spent and adjusting your mindset accordingly.

In sports, it’s crucial to recognize when a player needs rest, encouragement, or a strategy change. Similarly, when you’re feeling drained or off balance, it’s important to check in with yourself. Instead of pushing through or ignoring your emotions, take a moment to assess where you’re at emotionally. This emotional check-in is your opportunity to become the coach of your inner game, guiding yourself with compassion and understanding.

By acknowledging your feelings, you’re creating space for recovery and growth. You don’t have to rush to fix or change anything; simply recognizing and honouring your emotions is an important step toward emotional resilience. Just like an athlete who learns from each play—whether it’s a success or a mistake—you can learn from your emotions and use that knowledge to move forward with more clarity.

Here are a few journal questions to guide your emotional check-in, just like a coach would guide their team through a game plan:
đźŹ… What emotions am I feeling right now? Is there a specific emotion I’ve been avoiding or ignoring?
đźŹ… How can I support myself in this moment? What does my body or mind need to regain focus or energy?
đźŹ… What can I learn from my emotions today that will help me perform better in my daily life? Just as athletes take time to recover and regroup during a game, so too can you. Pausing to assess your emotional state helps you regain control and refocus, allowing you to continue moving forward with a stronger, more resilient mindset.
