Transforming Touch™

Healing Through Somatic Touch Therapy, Where Trauma Lives in the Body

Transforming Touch™ is a body-based trauma therapy used by our practitioners in Maple Ridge to support nervous system healing when talking alone isn’t enough. As part of our somatic experiencing touch approach, this modality works directly with the body’s deeper layers: the tissues, patterns, and protective responses shaped by trauma.

Clients often seek Transforming Touch™ when they’ve tried traditional talk therapy but still feel stuck in chronic tension, emotional shutdown, or a nervous system that won’t settle.

Why Somatic Touch Therapy Matters for Trauma Healing

Trauma doesn’t just live in memory, but it also lives in the body.

A chest that tightens before you know why.
A belly that clenches at the slightest conflict.
Shoulders that never fully drop, even in safe environments.

These patterns are the nervous system’s attempt to protect you.

Transforming Touch™ supports nervous system healing by helping the body complete interrupted survival responses and soften long‑held bracing patterns. For many clients, this gentle somatic touch therapy becomes the missing piece in their trauma recovery.

How Transforming Touch™ Works

Transforming Touch™, developed by Steve Terrell, uses gentle, structured touch to support the nervous system in releasing constricted energy held in the body’s tissues. Sessions are fully clothed, collaborative, and always guided by your comfort.

Transforming Touch® helps your system settle by:

  • Offering light, supportive touch that cues safety
  • Working slowly at a pace your body can tolerate
  • Following your nervous system’s moment‑to‑moment responses
  • Supporting regulation rather than forcing change
  • Helping your body remember what ease feels like

Your practitioner may place hands lightly on areas such as shoulders, upper back, ribcage, abdomen, head or hands.

Each touch point corresponds to developmental and nervous system patterns that may have been disrupted by trauma, chronic stress, or early attachment experiences.

The goal is not to “fix” anything, it’s to help your body remember how to settle, soften, and feel safe again.

Long‑standing patterns rooted in early experiences

Transforming Touch™ is not massage, chiropractic work, or body manipulation. It is not about reliving trauma or forcing emotional release.

Sessions are slow, gentle, and grounded in body-based trauma therapy principles. Your practitioner follows your pace, your cues, and your nervous system’s capacity and never faster than you’re ready to go.

One of the only places I feel 100% comfortable sharing every detail of my life with. I’ve been attending sessions for 5+ years now and I can never look back. I always feel heard, supported and validated during every single session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to include touch in my sessions?

No. Touch is always optional and always introduced gradually. Many clients begin with verbal Somatic Experiencing sessions and introduce touch elements later, when it feels right. You can also receive SE sessions without touch if you prefer, the approach is fully adaptable.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. Transforming Touch™ works with your present‑moment experience. You never need to revisit anything before you’re ready.

Is Transforming Touch available virtually?

Yes. It can be done over video (sometimes called Transforming Intentional Touch), with the therapist guiding the client through the same touch points. It may just take a bit longer for clients to feel the full effect compared to in-person sessions, since it relies on guided self-touch and attunement rather than direct therapist contact. Virtual sessions offered for clients residing in BC or Ontario.

How is this different from regular Somatic Experiencing®?

SE Touch uses the same foundation as verbal SE by tracking body sensation, carefully pacing the level of activation, supporting nervous system regulation and with the addition of informed, consensual therapeutic touch as a tool. Think of it as SE with an additional pathway available, not a replacement for verbal work.

What does a session feel like?

Sessions are slow, gentle, and collaborative. You may notice softening, warmth, steadier breathing, or increased ease. Every nervous system responds differently.

How long does Transforming Touch™ take to work?

Some people notice shifts within a few sessions; others benefit from longer‑term support. Pacing is essential for sustainable healing.

Can I combine Transforming Touch™ with other therapies?

Yes. Many clients blend Transforming Touch™ with Somatic Experiencing®, IFS, or talk therapy for a more comprehensive trauma‑healing approach.
